Seeing through the wall

They have turned the renovating corner!  It’s so exciting.  The tearing apart is almost done and the putting back together has begun.  The “wall” in the kitchen has been changed to a glass wall that will fold away and open to the gorgeous view.   Honed concrete floors are going in this week and Jan is sourcing gorgeous finishings.  I can’t wait to see the kitchen…. grey slab uppers but the island will be done in either walnut or teak.  (Decision to be done)

Making it Happen!

I visited the Carmichael site yesterday. There is so much going on, outdoors and indoors, and lots of planning. Jan has nailed down some of finishes and details and they are gorgeous of course. There is some reference to the hexagon influence through the house and wood, grey and concrete seem to be making an appearance. I can’t wait to see the final product!

Another great find!

Whenever a sledgehammer is involved, things usually turn ugly. But not at the Carmicheal House. This sledgehammer broke down a couple walls and moved the front door further away. This created more space in the house! Also, we found a rare item; an original George Nelson Bubble Lamp! These lamps were created in the 1940s.

Like what Howard Miller wrote in his 1968 sales brochure, “The airy, lighthearted ‘Bubbles’ designed by George Nelson, make lamps and lighting fixtures that are so effective and functional in today’s contemporary settings.  Their pleasing shapes are fashioned in sturdy, light-weight steel and a special translucent white plastic”. It is true because the lamp is still functional and in one piece after so many years! As always, the Carmicheal House is full of surprises and treasures.

Treasure Everywhere!

There is always something interesting at the Carmicheal House. As you might know already, the Carmincheal House has been around for many years. The items in the house have a lot of history. For instance, there is an oil meter and Maytag washing machine that is more than 50 years new (new because they still work and in perfect condition!). The Maytag team will be showcasing the washing machines in the Maytag Showroom. How exciting is that! Not only is the Charmichael house fascinating from the inside, the  tree outside has a very interesting and beautiful pattern on it.

A Part of The Plan

Check out these plans!  I can’t even imagine dreaming up this house.  We are so looking forward to seeing what Jan and Jim do to re-create this house.  I am sure they have some interesting ideas up
their sleeves. Let the magic begin!

Amazing Views!

What a difference one day of landscaping can do!  The view is incredible at the Carmichael House! Without the trees, English Bay is right in front of you.

A New Exciting Renovation!

We are so excited to be following this renovation!  My good friends Jan and Jim bought the Ron Thom designed Carmichael House in West Vancouver.  It is iconic in its design but is definitely in need of some TLC.  If you aren’t familiar with the Carmichael Home this Globe and Mail article will give you a great overview of its significance.

I have known Jan and Jim for 25+ years and have seen many renos, new builds, landscaping transformations and creations and am still dazzled by their talent.  I can’t wait to see the process and especially the end result.   Their intention is to bring this house back to its glory and into this millennium.
